Silent Pianos

silent piano, the silent revolution

The Silent PianoTM technology allows a fully acoustic piano (hammers and strings) to be played silently using headphones, with digital sound.

When the silent function is activated, the hammers will no longer hit the strings. Instead, a highly sophisticated sensor-technology captures all movements of the keys and sends them to the digital tone module. Silent pianos allow you to play a real acoustic piano with headphones at any time, day or night, without being disturbed and without disturbing others. It allows 24-hr practice and possesses many other features including a range of pre-installed sounds, the ability to record your own performances, and the connection to mobile devices with the latest mobile apps.

To activate the silencing function on acoustic pianos, the middle pedal is pressed downwards and held to the left. This function causes hammer shank stoppers to move into a position that prevents hammers from striking the strings.

While the piano is silenced in this manner, the movement of the keys and other performance information (such as touch sensitivity and dynamics) are picked up by sensors within the piano and are converted into digital data. This digital sound is then sent to stereo headphones for the player to enjoy in complete privacy.

Silent pianos can be identified by silent systems that hang under the left-hand side of the keyboard.

Any acoustic piano can be manufactured as a silent piano directly from the warehouse, but the silencing mechanisms cannot be added after an acoustic piano has been made. Piano players will notice that the touch and feel of the piano keys stay the same when using both acoustic or digital sounds.
